‘First half blitz leaves ASHburton up in
smoke’
Saturday 30 June (Away)
v. Ashburton
Having made some tentative steps into the transfer market to bolster our squad due to holiday commitments, the offer of a box of Anzac biscuits and half time oranges were unable to tempt Archie Thompson to leave the Victory! However, he would have struggled getting a game, especially after our first half performance.
Playing in our slick away shirts, we took the game to Ashburton from the off. We looked dangerous every time we attacked and soon made the decisive breakthrough.
Utilising the space and quick movement of the ball, Josh continued his goal scoring form of last week, and soon had grabbed 5 before half time. Alex added another, and we went in at half time 6 – 1 up. The performance so far was built on strong tackling and passing through Jonathon and Ari in midfield, whilst the reliable rotation of our defence of James, Lochie, Peter, Jack and Jeremy, enabled Kirk to continue his improvement in goal.
Eager to not fall away in the second half and maintain our dominance, we unfortunately let Ashburton grow in confidence. We tended to push up too far and left Kirk isolated and having no chance in goal. Although Alex managed to slot home his 10th of the season, we still ended the game 7 – 4 victors. Josh with 5 and Alex with 2.
A special mention to James, who had his best game of the season at right back. He was determined with his tackling and confident when bringing the ball out of defence.
Next week we face Mooroolbark, 10am kick-off at Anderson Park.
