An off day for the Under 10 Blues
It just wasn't meant to be for the Blues last Saturday against Brighton. Doncaster's undefeated run came to an end with the visitors scoring an impressive 7-3 win.
Lack of concentration, a series of defensive errors and not enough commitment, allowed Brighton to win a game that could have been ours, had we put in a little more effort.
The visitors were up two goals in the early stages of the game, but the Blues made a great comeback and equalized with goals comming from James and Jack. However, again Brighton was allowed to come into our half, scoring another two goals making the score 4-2.
The Blues pushed forward and managed to make it 4-3 just before half-time with Tim giving us a lot of hope for a better second half that unfortunately didn't arrive.
Brighton, making the most of the chances presented to them (the majority from our own mistakes), made it 5-3, 6-3 and finally 7-3. James' run and his shot hitting the upright was the best that the Blues had to show in the second half.
The lesson from this game was that we need to be a lot more focussed and committed to what we work for and what we talk about at training and before the game.
We now need to put this game behind us and look forward to our next game. We need to keep our heads high, believe in ourselves and work harder at training to improve as players, and as a unit.
Heads up and keep up the hard work!!
With Regards,
John

Round 5 - U9 Yellow - Match Report
Saturday 24th May vs Ashburton
A close and tight tussle saw the Rovers prevail:
With two teams that looked evenly matched at the beginning of the game it was sure to be an exciting battle. And so it turned out to be with a low scoring affair where only three first half goals were scored by the Rovers and some brilliant goal keeping from the opposition shut us out in the second half.
It was a day of many chances created by the boys in yellow with the woodwork (actually the metalwork) denying them several goals. In total the goal post was struck five times and if not for the talents of an extremely capable opposing keeper who saved no less than six certain goals, struck with venom, the score-line could have been significantly different.
The first half began with a flurry and much energy by both teams. The Rovers quickly gained the ascendancy and moved forward. It wasn’t long before Spyros struck a thunderbolt that was just parried by the keeper for the first of his many saves. With the ensuing rebound, Jack pounced only to be denied by the post. Both well timed shots that were simply unlucky not to have broken the deadlock. The half continued with the Rovers controlling the midfield and passing out wide to the wings. Even at this young age the boys have been well drilled to keep their shape on the field and create spaces for each other. The wings were well occupied by Anthony on the right and Christos on the left who both had an absolute blinder dribbling past their opposition and whipping the ball into the middle. Aaron was fantastic pushing up from defence and almost occupying the midfield position where barely a ball went past him. Michael again in defence controlled everything and was cool and calm in his execution.
The first goal was a ripper after some good work by Alexandre and Jack in the middle of the park, running past several opposing players, Jack was on fire with another great shot off the post and Christos swooped onto the loose ball to blast it into the top of the net for his first goal of the season.
More great shots without the luck of troubling the score-sheet were to follow by Alexandre and Ryan who was again dribbling past players and creating numerous opportunities. The change in the midfield which seemed to ignite the boys, was when Dion came on and made every loose ball a contest as he pushed his way forward in position to receive a great ball from Jack, slotting it brilliantly into the top corner. Where there is one, there is always a second when Dion is involved, and as sure as night follows day within a minute he had his second on the board after a great run from Alexandre down the right wing with a pass to Ryan who gave the final assist.
The second half was significant for the fact that the boys were kept scoreless in a half for the first time this year. The game was nonetheless very exciting and action-packed with many great opportunities created, especially by Joshua who seemed to have the ball on a string down the left wing. His endeavour was second to none, but alas the ball simply would not roll into the back of the net. With one final chance to increase the score Alex threw himself headfirst at a cross from the left, which would have been contender for goal of the year had he connected. A greatly competitive game with some genuine competition that the boys have craved this year. The final score of 3 – 0 may not have been entirely reflective of the play but was spectacular for the skill and composure shown by the boys and their continued endeavour to play passing football.
Season Stats: P – 4 W – 4 L – 0 D – 0 GF – 40 GA - 0
Well done to all the boys and the coach.
Next week we meet Richmond away at Kevin Bartlett Reserve with a 10am kick-off.

Round 5 - U15A Girls - Match Report
Sunday 25.05.08 Round 5 - vs Hoppers Crossing
After a very convincing win last week at home 8-0 vs Dandenong Eagles this away game to Hoppers Crossing should’ve been a stroll in the park. Unfortunately soccer is a funny sport where any team on the day can produce miracles. Donny were missing five players and had only one substitute but what a substitute as young “squirt” as she loves to be called (Kariah White) most certainly scored the goal of the year via a volley just outside the big box. Similarly, Renee drove (a dead ball) free kick from out-side the box high up in the top corner to make it 1-0 minutes earlier, very very late in the game.
The first half was very poor. The second half however was a different story. Tessa Sernio was moved to the centre and was instrumental in many attacking moves. Others deserving mention are Renee for her continuous pressure and winning of the ball. Young Natasha Lusi who has been down off late was extraordinary in the second half when we needed her most with her countless attacks and crosses from the left wing. In addition Supryia Lal who was awesome in the back line.
Hoppers Crossing defended in numbers and together with their keeper in form they were exceptionally hard to break down. In the second half Doncaster had the opposition pinned in their back third and was not until the end when two extraordinary strikes at goal (as previously mentioned) gave us the deserved rewards.
Do not miss this weeks match against Brighton who are 4th and very competitive for 11.15am kick off at Anderson Park.
Team line up with rating as follows:
Emma Jones 7, Melanie Feorer 6, Yianna Cocotsi 4, Supryia Lal 7, Tessa Sernio 8,
Johanna Cotterill 5, Brianna Mirabella 5, Renee Zebic 8, Lia Privitelli 6, Melissa Maizels 5, Natasha Lusi 7, Kariah White 7.
Players out on the day:
Demi Mihaloudis, Elise Kyrgios (injured), Siobhan Gray (sick), Christina Katsambanis (N/A), Louise Burridge (O/S).

Round 5 - U14A - Match Report
U14A Whitehorse vs Doncaster Rovers 25th May
On a mild autumn afternoon with no wind Whitehorse hosted Doncaster at Terrara Park.
Conditions were ideal for this clash of two teams vying for second position on the ladder.
The game started at a fast pace and both sides were pushing the ball around with slick passes, with Whitehorse attempting the through ball whenever they could but Rovers defence stood firm and repelled everything that came their way. With Alex, Phil and Chris on top through the centres Rovers mounted some good attacks as well. Damien and Drew were holding the ball in and when Drew was paid a free Nick Dinakis put the ball right into the box area where Phil was able to use his height on the goalie and put away a contested header into the net. What a great start by the boys and this put Whitehorse into an aggressive frame but good saves by Luke twice and pressure by Chris, Jansen, Michael Piccoli, Joel, Matt and Elliot kept Whitehorse at bay. Damien had a crack at goal but was saved by the keeper. The ball was moving from end to end quickly with good team play however no real pressure was applied to the goalie’s in the last moments of the first half.
Half-time score: Whitehorse 0 : Rovers 1
The second half continued on just where both teams had left off with Whitehorse mounting the first two attacks on goal and Rovers counter attacking with Alex making a good header after a long Nick D throw but this was saved by the keeper. Whitehorse then attacked again and received the first of several corners, but kicked out to relieve the pressure. Matt and Steve combined well down the right for Steve to make a good shot on goal only to be thwarted by the keeper. Good pressure by Elliot, Alex and Steve kept the ball moving forwards for Rovers. James, Dion and Nick Vass were also in the play up forward but scoring chances were hard to come by.
Whitehorse kept mounting challenges and received a free 25 metres from goal, however the kicker rushed the shot and it went too long and wide. Good play through the centre again allowed a loose ball right in front for Rovers and Alex banged the ball hard just above the keeper but it hit the cross bar and bounced straight out. Ohhh so close!
The play was very entertaining as was the Whitehorse coach who had done nothing but moan to the ref all day, since the header goal that he thought was obstruction. When he wasn’t giving it to the ref he got stuck into Steve for being so biased, calling him “yellow eyes” to which Steve replied “You can’t talk blue eyes”. Well I was pretty close to both benches and take it from me their coach looked nothing like Frank Sinatra!
Whitehorse counter attacked and banged in a hard shot on goal that Luke managed to fend off only for Whitehorse to bang it in again. Another great save by Luke but the free ball was swooped on again by Whitehorse to kick the equalizer. A good game by both teams was played for parents to enjoy and appreciate the skills and teamwork development.
Scores at full-time: Whitehorse 1 : Rovers 1
