Last Wednesday Night for 2007

This Wednesday night we see our first season of outdoor Futsal come to an end with a double round of games kicking off from 6.30pm

The bbq and the canteen will be operating so feel free to come down and share in the atmosphere.

The "soccer under the stars" concept was a first for Rovers in 2007 so even if you haven't participated this year why not come down and check it out because it is set to become an annual post-season activity.

Season 2008 will kick off with our Player Assessment Day (PAD) to be held at the FFV grounds in Darebin on Saturday February 2nd.

The day kicks off from 9am but keep an eye on your email for further information as the new year gets underway. Please note that the PAD is not a trial day but it is compulsory for all players wishing to play with DRSC in 2008. The Director of Coaching and his staff will be conducting a rigorous assessment of the entire Junior squad ahead of formal trials shortly thereafter.

AGM and Registration Date News

Doncaster Rovers Soccer Club Announces

It's that time again when members must support our club, this time in two ways.
1. Attend our "Annual General Meeting" on Sunday 2nd December at 11.00am at our home Anderson Park (see web link Notice of AGM Agenda 2007V2)
2. Register for another great year in 2008 (see web link DRSC Registration Form 2008 and Registration 2008 V2for registration dates).
This year our club has taken a number of steps we hope will bring success not only on but off the field.
· Appointment of "Director of Junior Coaching" Milton Sakkos · The introduction of "summer soccer under the stars" · Access to "Futsal" all year round. · Player assessment day in 2008 where all players (U10 to U18) will be assessed to assist in good coaching. · Replacement of the small training pitch with artificial turf, lighting and fencing. · Introduction of a fully refundable canteen levy (refundable on assisting in the canteen for 3 hours during the season).
This year we have raised our fees (these have not changed for the last three years), this change has been brought about for a number reasons including:
· 400% increase in rent · Increased FFV costs · New FFA costs · Drought associated costs
To ensure the success of our club your "Committee of Management" and "Junior Sub-Committee" have set fees for 2008 as follows:
Family membership - sub junior (U8 to U10) $395 (GST Inc) per player Family membership - Junior Player (U11 to U18) $495 (GST Inc) per player
Refundable canteen levy (applies once per family) $ 40 (GST Inc)
To assist families to meet the new fees the club will this year accept payment by credit card in two equal payments, 50% on registration and a further drawdown of 50% on 18th March 2008 (cash and cheque payments must be made in full at time of registration).
This year players will receive their playing apparel, ball and club winter top as a part of their registration cost prior to season commencement in April 2008.
Your committee has also been busy with our long term vision meeting with the minister for sport & recreation James Merlino. At this meeting we put forward our plan for two (2) floodlit, artificial pitches along the Reynolds Road Boundary which was received with great enthusiasm; your committee intends to follow through with this plan until DRSC is the best football club not only in Manningham but Victoria.

1969 Past Player story

Hi,

My name is Paul McRobert, I used to be called Paul Bullivant prior to my parents divorce and moving to South Australia with my mother. Having said that, I still have very fond memories of my time as a junior player with Doncaster Rovers. I started in 1969 in the under 12’s coached by Wally Garonski and managed by Jim Rapson. We were a very successful team, which featured players such as myself, David and Jimmy Ave, Ian Gartside, Peter Brown and Paul Desmond. Over the next 5 years (1974 was my last year before moving interstate), I played alongside the likes of the Rankins, Robert Foster, Robert Dawson, Gary Dunnicliffe, David Gow, Amelio Anselma and the Humbles. We had some great players/results over that period and although not being there, I have usually checked the results in the paper wherever possible.

I would be really keen to get in touch with anyone who was involved with Donny in those days and my still be around the place. Occasionally I do manage to get over to Melbourne and would love to meet up with some of my old team mates and watch the seniors play. If there is anyone still at the club from those days of the early 70’s, I would love to hear from them and try and organise a get together at some stage.

Since leaving Doncaster Rovers, I moved to the South East of South Australia to a place called Mount Gambier and played senior soccer up to around age 42 (obviously the standard is a bit lower than over there and I was able to keep going until the body finally said enough). I have also had around 15 years junior coaching experience and have 6 years experience as a senior coach.

These days my two sons both play, one has just moved to Adelaide to play and my younger son has just broken into the seniors at Inter. I no longer have any active involvement, preferring to just go and watch my sons play. Because of this arrangement, I am free to get away on weekends for the first time in quite some decades.

Once again I would love to get in touch with some of the old boys from the mighty Doncaster Rovers also, should any reunions ever be planned for players and supporters of those far off days. I would love to be contacted. I can be contacted on this email address or by mobile number 0438 811 561.

I hope this letter meets with some success in me regaining my links with Doncaster Rovers.

Thank You for taking the time to read my letter and Good Luck to the Rovers this year.

U9 Match Report 08/09/07

DONCASTER ROVERS U9’s

‘The Blues Twos’

‘Season ends as it started’

Saturday 8 September (Home)
v. Ashburton

The season drew to an end with the whole squad back together, with Chris back from his extended vacation in Greece.

It would have been nice to finish with a win, but we had to settle for a 1 – 1 draw, Alex finishing a neat move to give us the lead, only for Ashburton to equalise before half time.

Despite some missed chances in the second half, we were unable to transfer our pressure into a winning goal, and had to settle for a draw.

Over the past 16 weeks, we have played some great soccer (football to me!), and considering our squad was assembled for the first time only a couple of weeks before the season started, it is a credit to how the boys have played and performed.

Every boy has improved and will continue to do so. Supported by a great group of parents, Jim as team manager and part-time referee together with Andrew, I would like to thank you all for a tremendous season and making it a most memorable one.

Thanks to Kirk, Lochie, Jeremy, James, Justin, Chris, Ari, Peter, Alex, Jack, Jonathon and Josh for being a terrific bunch of lads to coach.

Well done, boys!!!! You should be proud of your efforts, roll on 2008.

Rovers' Press Release: New Director of Coaching

“DONCASTER ROVERS SOCCER CLUB; FORGING A UNIQUE BRAND & VISION OF THE FUTURE OF FOOTBALL IN VICTORIA!”

Doncaster Rovers has a ‘unique’ idea that a football club should be and offer more than what has traditionally occurred in Australia for way too long. The plans were simple, to develop a truly professional and self funding and sustainable football program that could service the club stakeholders and immediate community all year round. The plans were simply sampled from and based around the internationally acclaimed Football ‘super clubs’ of Europe and South America. With the co operation of the ambitious and innovative pioneering foresight of a club like Doncaster Rovers we now see the genesis of something inimitable. The decision to come together was made easy when most of the ‘groundwork’ already holds fast at Doncaster Rovers Soccer Club:

-One of the largest junior football memberships in Victoria
-New and improved football facilities and amenities
-Continuity and stability at committee, financial and leadership levels
-Plans for the growth of the club through further facility development on site and with the accompaniment of local interest groups for ‘state of the art’ artificial turf pitches and indoor facilities.

The new models within the existing core business of the club, features a variety of new initiatives and programs, to name a few we envision the following plans;
The recruitment of quality ‘Heads of Coaching’ to facilitate the professional development and education of current coaches and preparation of all junior players at the club.

The restructuring of the coaching and playing pathways at the club in order to maximise participation, enjoyment and develop and nurture excellence through professionalism and knowledge – creating the vision of establishing the best access for juniors to further representative duty at state and national teams, junior super leagues and seniors premier leagues.

The provision, access and equity to a variety of developmental training academies suitable to all levels of development based around the technical, tactical, psychological and physiological capacities of a player which will include; tailored training regimens, pre season talent identification camps and clinics and complete player analysis tracking development and potential of playing personnel.

A dynamic and exciting calendar of tournaments, events and high level competitions to cater for all levels and abilities & all year round playing opportunities through a variety of initiatives - Summer 5 a side football programs and courses, mini world cups, Futsal competitions, 7 a side, beach and street soccer titles and events.

The establishment of a customised, development oriented, bi annual international touring calendar offered to teams in age groups and skill levels throughout sister clubs in Asia, South America and Europe.

The import of at least two international ‘marquee’ players from Brazil for mentoring, coaching, promotion, education, cultural exchange opportunities and playing purposes.

NEW DRSC DIRECTOR OF COACHING: Milton Sakkos

PROFILE:

My own background recently has been heavily dominated by my role as the Chief Executive Officer and Director of Coaching, Development & Elite Performance for all Vikings and Victorian Vipers Futsal operations throughout the state.

I have a senior football licence qualification and an internationally accredited elite Futsal licence from Brazil. My formal education and professional academic history and knowledge base is essentially within the Human Movement & Performance domain of sport and related studies. My ‘Masters’ was fundamentally centred on the design, implementation and performance analysis of athletes inside of the football/ futsal sphere of development and excellence.

My own involvement in football over the last 15 years as an educator, coach and director of performance has allowed me the opportunity to travel and coach overseas, attend international events and work from the grass roots of the code all the way through the elite state and national teams at youth and senior levels.

Highlights along the way have been National Championships at a variety of age levels for male and female teams in both Futsal and Football with representative Victorian teams and my own previous and current clubs and schools. However, my experiences with the “Futsalroos” over the last FIFA World Futsal Cup in China, 2004 and the Hyundai World 5 a side Championships at the FIFA World Cup in Germany, 2006, are the standout memories…

Herald Sun Soccer Article

ROUNDBALL GAME IS KICKING GOALS

From the Herald Sun

By Paula Beauchamp

SOCCER has become a problem.

For most parents the sport's low injury record is a drawcard, but increasingly mums and dads are being forced to console kids who can't get a kick.

Of all the sports played in Victoria, soccer is experiencing the most rapid growth.

In the past three years the number of players registered to compete in Melbourne soccer competitions has grown by 13 per cent, according to the Football Federation of Victoria.

That growth in demand means too few facilities and too many players on the sidelines.

"Australians have always loved their sport," Kingston Council's leisure and culture manager Dean Walker observed.

"But, as we become a more multicultural society, less traditional sports such as soccer are becoming more popular."

Councils today face growing demand from clubs wanting additional playing fields and improved facilities, particularly to cater to more juniors and women.

And the winter season is no longer enough.

Players and their clubs want to play 12 months of the year, a "seasonal creep" that is clashing with traditional summer sports such as cricket.

To address the stalemate in their area, Bayside and Kingston councils are working together on a regional soccer strategy.

Bayside is a well-established area with limited open space to allow development opportunities.

Kingston has a little more flexibility in that regard.

“You need to get smarter about what you do with your open spaces and learn to make more efficient use of them.”

Mr Walker said the days when local governments would look solely within their own borders to address facility issues were fast diminishing.

"As suburbs become fully developed you don't have unlimited open space to address your needs," Mr Walker said.

"You need to get smarter about what you do with your open spaces and learn to make more efficient use of them."

Kingston and Bayside will consider using some facilities jointly for junior competitions or seniors in both areas, depending on the outcome of the regional planning study.

Both councils are currently assessing tenders, which closed this week, for a contract to carry out the study.

The contract is estimated to be worth about $60,000.

The study will explore gaps in existing facility provision and set up a framework for sustainably delivering soccer opportunities across the region.

According to briefing notes provided by both councils, young people are being turned away from both Kingston and Bayside clubs because they have reached capacity.

Futsal, an indoor version of soccer, has enormous growth potential but is already at capacity, according to the project brief.

Clubs, private operators and recreation facility providers are all establishing their own competitions.

But teams wishing to participate currently languish on waiting lists.

Nor can men's teams at the elite level be accommodated.

The study will also look at participation trends particular to the area to predict future demand.

But the current love affair with soccer is unlikely to abate.

Mr Walker says the ease with which kids pick up soccer skills, gets them hooked.

"It's not like learning to handle an odd-shaped (Australian Rules) ball," he said.

"A soccer ball is perfectly round, easy to kick and kids enjoy the early success they get. It makes them enjoy it more."

Pasta Night at Anderson Park this Friday

In our efforts to assist our large amount of juniors, the Doncaster Rovers committee has decided to launch a program whereby we can provide assistance to young players. This assistance scheme will benefit not only elite but the club is also looking to launch an assistance program for those players, boys or girls, that may find the financial burden of fee's, boots, etc difficult to meet.

At elite level players must pay for their own way to represent the state at outdoor or Futsal and that is also the case if you are a VIS player and playing in tournaments to assess players for selection into the Joeys. This can cost between $1,200 and $2,000 per trip and at the sharp end of the elite you need to go on 3 to 4 of these a year, so you can imagine the burden this places on the family.

In an effort to raise further funds to supplement financial commitments already promised by the club , DRSC will be holding its inaugural ‘Pasta Night’ on Friday August the 31st, commencing at 7.15pm.

There will be 3 pasta sauces on offer (Bolognese, Carbonara and Siciliana [Tomato, salami, olives and Spring Onion]) served with a choice of Spaghetti or Penne (tubes).

All pasta dishes will be priced at $10 a plate for a main course sized serve. The canteen will be open and soft and alcoholic drinks will be able to be purchased as people want. The senior women will be playing on the night so everyone will also be able to lend some support to the senior women’s team as well.

Note that this date allows the junior and senior teams invited to attend and ‘load up on carbs’ for their matches on the weekend. As a result, all players will be doing themselves a favour as well as helping our first recipient, Rani, achieve a possible dream. It is hoped that if this first ‘Pasta Night’ is a success, it will become a regular event and fundraiser for the club which will be channelled towards assisting children & families to achieve goals whether that be at elite level or to simply assist in playing at Doncaster Rovers .

The CoM wants this night to be a real success and to show Rani and his family how proud we are for them. We therefore request and urge that all players with partners or parents to attend from 7.15pm to approx 9pm, including Seniors, Ressies and Senior Women as well as all the U/15 and U/16 teams as Rani would have played with many of the players spread through these teams over the course of his career at DRSC.

‘Great team performance sees off Richmond’

Saturday 25 August (Home)
v. Richmond

With 10 players available, Ari absent due to illness, we entertained a strong Richmond team wanting to reverse our defeat earlier in the season.

We put in a solid team performance, with everyone playing their part in what was a tremendous effort by every player. We tackled hard, passed accurately and in the end our pressure told. Despite Josh rattling the bar in the first half, it remained 0 – 0 at half-time.

In the second half, we stepped up our pressure, and thoroughly deserved the 2 goals Josh and Jonathon scored, the first from a neat through ball from Alex, and the second a cracking shot from a tight angle.

It was pleasing to see the midfield battle hard and win the ball continuously. Jack, James, Alex, Peter and Jonathon all looking composed on the ball and providing the energy moving forward to supply Josh up front.

Kirk kept another clean sheet in goal, looking composed whenever he was threatened, which was kept to a minimum, as Lachie, Jeremy and Justin all dealt with any attacks in our defence.

A thoroughly deserved 2 – 0 victory.

Next week we are at home against the DR Blues 1s, 10am kick off at Anderson Park.

Time is Running Out

The United Petroleum sponsorship program that will deliver an ongoing income for Doncaster Rovers Soccer Club month after month, year after year is shortly printing its special members cards. So we really need all aplications returned to the canteen at DONVALE RESERVE or your team manager by Wednesday 29th August

To Recap:
United have designed a program that will give the club 1 cent from every litre of fuel purchased by our club members and supporters from any of United's hundreds of outlets around Australia using their specially designed "Doncaster Rovers and United Community Benefits Card"To help the club benefit you will need to complete a form that will be given to you by your team manager. Please complete the details and return it to them. A plastic community card will then be issued to you. Make sure you order enough cards to give to your family and friends and even your employees.(especially if they drive trucks).

Brad White from United Petroleum says "Having an outlet across the road from Anderson park and as part of our community spirit we thought it was appropriate in sponsoring the Doncaster Rovers Soccer club. It's about supporting grass roots and community sports. And hopefully our program will make it easier for the club to find funds every year. The amount raised per year could be as high as $15,000 dollars per year if all your members support it"

Adrian Cappola from DRSC "says the club is looking forward to a long and fruitful partnership with United and urges all club members and supporters to complete their forms and support United Petroleum. They offer all the fuels from LPG , Diesel to high octane unleaded. We are also proud to be the first club in Australia to have partnered with United in this type of venture."

‘The Blues Twos’

‘Two’s too good with their neat passing!’

Saturday 18 August (Home)
v. Mooroolbark

We again had a player missing through illness, this time Jeremy, but still managed to record a comfortable win.

We played with more determination, looking to open up the opposition defence with neat, quick passing. Our first came from a nice pass from Josh to Jack, who finished it off by rounding the keeper.

Ari got back on the score sheet again, grabbing two by half time.

James was determined in defence with his tackling, whilst Lachie fitted in well to his role as centre half, keeping the defence organised. Justin was his reliable and unflustered self, reliably helping stifle any attacks.

Peter provided some nice touches and passes in midfield on the left, with Jack giving us balance on the right too.

In the second half, we tried to keep our shape and create space. Jonathon reliably winning possession for us in midfield and Alex providing the link between midfield and attack.

Though Mooroolbark had a few chances, Kirk was commanding in goal, and despite them grabbing one back, we pushed forward with Josh grabbing a second half hat-trick, one of which was a sweet move between Ari, Alex and finished by Josh.

A comfortable and pleasing 6 – 1 victory.

Keep it going boys, three games to go.

Next week we are at home against Richmond, trying to avenge our 3 – 2 defeat earlier in the season, 10am kick off at Anderson Park.

U16 Super League Match Report 12/08/07

Expectations were high this week after our poor showing against North Caulfield the previous week, despite only losing 1-0.

We were up against the bottom of the table Noble Park who had taken an undeserving point in our last meeting courtesy of a goal by Danny Brown being disallowed.

The squad had been decimated during the week due to illness, with only 13 players available.

We started strongly and scored after 17 minutes following a Chris Kotsikas free kick which was deflected into the net by a Noble Park Defender. Notwithstanding, the Referee awarded the Goal to Patrick Beggs (according to the team sheet) and I am sure Patrick will not argue.

Expectations were shattered only 1 minute later, when scores were level after not 1 but 2 offside decisions were not awarded.

Noble Park then began to dictate terms with Rovers forced to make a substitution just before half time following an injury to Jared Lopez.

Jared was replaced by Alex Kostadinoski who assumed a striking role alongside Morgan Pickett, with Danny Brown slotting into the Left side of Midfield.

The teams were locked at 1-1 at half time, much to the disappointment of both Coaching staff and players.

It was time for some serious attack on the ball in the second half.

Andre Sung, Danny Brown and Sam Di Martino began to control the midfield with both aggression and composure on the ball, whilst Justin Khouri and Joseph Khalil tightened up their marking duties. Zane El-Mohammed who had provided support down the left, was replaced with Howard Wong.

Howard had an immediate impact intercepting a pass then laying a ball off for Danny Brown, only for his shot to sail over the bar.

Morgan Pickett then collected another pass from Howard, only to see his shot cannon against the bar and over.

The introduction of Alex Kostadinoski produced the desired and much needed result when his right foot shot from inside the box following a through ball from Sam Di Martino gave Rovers a 2-1 lead 20 minutes into the second half.

The intensity lifted with Patrick Beggs providing drive down the right, whilst the defense and midfield were standing firm.

We put ourselves under presssure giving the ball away in dangerous areas which required the acrobatic skills of Rovers Captain and Goalkeeper Alex Ryan to prevent Noble Park from gaining an equaliser.

The game was put beyond doubt in the 29th minute when Patrick Beggs got in behind the defense following another Chris Kotsikas freekick, and deftly volleyed passed the stranded Noble Park keeper. (Patrick we will give you that one).

A pleasing result in the end and one which was thoroughly deserved.
We are at home again this week against Langwarrin (part of the catch up round), so if there are any of you out there who are not participating this weekend, please come along and support the boys.

‘Blues record first double after solid performance’

Saturday 11 August (Home)
v. Riversdale

Unfortunately Justin was missing due to illness, but this didn’t stop the Blues putting in a solid performance and recording their first double of the season.
We started brightly, looking to pass and move the ball forward. A neat pass from Jonathon split the Riversdale defence and Alex calmly slotted in the opener. This remained the score until half-time.

In the second half, we dominated possession, wasting a few chances but converting through Josh and Alex.

A 3 – 0 win was a fair result from a performance that was solid, though at times it did seem we were stuck in second gear. If we had been more clinical and showed more urgency, the result would have been more impressive.

However, as many coaches would say, a win is a win!!

All the boys shared the work load, our defence becoming stronger with every game. Well done to Kirk, Lochie, James, Jeremy, Jonathon, Ari, Jack, Alex, Peter and Josh who all contributed to the performance.

Next week we have our re-arranged game at home against Mooroolbark, 10am kick off at Anderson Park.

‘ The Blues Twos’

‘Stunning strike not enough to lift the Blues’

Saturday 4 August (Away)
v. Bulleen

At full strength, we approached the game against Bulleen with a determination to take the game to them, and not to be overawed by their unbeaten 2 year record.

In what was a very competitive game, our tactics to bite into tackles and get the ball forward as quickly as possible certainly put them under pressure.

However, falling 2 goals behind midway through the first half, only made us raise our game. A quick break through the midfield and a neat pass from Alex set up Ari, who struck a wonderful, sweet shot into the bottom corner from an acute angle, bringing it back to 2 – 1.

Going in at half-time, we knew they were feeling the pressure, quickly moving men behind the ball as we began to gain the upper hand territorially.

The first goal of the second half would be vital, but despite some near misses and a couple of good saves, we were unable to equalise.

As we pushed forward, Bulleen made us pay with 2 further goals, leaving us valiant in a 4 – 1 defeat.

This was not a true reflection of the game, as we fought and competed well and with a little more luck in front of goal and decisions our way, could quite easily come away with a result.

All the team played very well. Kirk on his comeback was again solid, whilst James, Justin, Jeremy, Lochie, Peter, Jack, Ari, Alex, Jonathon and Josh all played their part up and down the pitch.

We’ll have them next season boys!!!!!

Thanks to Jim and John for taking training this week, see you on Wednesday boys.

Next week we start our run towards the end of the season with 5 consecutive games at home, 10am kick off against Riversdale.

U11 Match Report 28/07/07

Match Report – Doncaster Rovers U11 Kangaroos Yellow v Box Hill

After a season with victories few & far between, a trip to Wembley Park to take on traditional rivals Box Hill was undertaken with that extra sense of purpose.

Captain Todd McCarthy lead out the side which had been depleted by injury, illness & absence and from the kick off Box Hill attacked the Rovers flanks. They couldn’t though penetrate the defence with an inspirational performance from Liam Wilson at stopper repelling wave after wave. At right back Christopher Puljevic kept the talking up with Bertan Kaya at sweeper and Steven Pythas on the left hand defence proving too difficult for the opposition to penetrate.

Regular sweeper Chris Damatopoulos (recovering from illness) looked on from the sideline eager to join his mates. The backs played exceptionally to keep out Box Hill’s sustained attacks and it was only a few balls that came the way of stand-in keeper Miles Connolly who kept a clean sheet playing at # 1 with regular keeper Andrew Dilley absent.

As the game settled down Doncaster put together some constructive runs forward with a number of combinations paying dividends. Josh Hughes worked the right midfield whilst in the middle Nik Kasapidis and Steven Sercia cleverly worked the ball around the opposition. Up front the striker pair of James Theodoropoulos and Liam Cooper-Smith were then able to take advantage of the through balls to put pressure on the Box Hill defence.

At half-time the boys went to oranges having out-played their opponents and a 0-0 score representative of the lack of shots on goal. A change of keepers at the break saw Miles swap with Todd in the midfield and with time blown back on the boys attacked to the western end eager to go one step further than the 1-1 draw with Box Hill earlier in the season.

Having lost regular striker Stefan Pagotto to surgery earlier in the week, numbers were bolstered with Gerard Papoulis stepping up from the U10s. Playing from left mid-field his nerves were soon forgotten with some great runs down the wing and the ultimate prize of a goal to put Rovers up 1-nil.

Defence held tight and communication among the boys prevented Box Hill capitalising on a number of corners. Chris Dama convinced the coach (& his dad) that he was well enough for some game time and helped the side keep up the positive talking. Todd joined Miles with a clean sheet as keeper as the final whistle signaled a fitting 1-0 result. A just reward for some hard training.

The words of coach Jack Talia ringing true as the team song was sung …"timing & talking will bring results"

Well done guys.

‘The Blues Twos’

‘Honours shared in tough battle'

Saturday 28 July (Home)
v. Glen Waverley

We welcomed back Justin from his overseas trip, but lost our goalkeeper, Kirk, due to illness. So a bit of re-shuffling was needed against a strong opposition.

We had more possession in the first half and utilised the right side well, with Jack supplying some telling passes into the middle. One ball found Josh, who knocked in the opener to give us the lead at half-time.

In the second half, Glen Waverley came out strongly, finding an equaliser when we failed to get in any challenge from a free-kick.

However, we responded well, Jonathon scoring a beauty from distance, and Ari hitting the post with a sizzler.

Back came Glen Waverley again, who grabbed another equaliser with a well taken goal.
Despite missing a late chance to win the game, the boys can be very proud of their effort, the game ending 2 – 2.

Lochie stared in defence, Jack played his best game in midfield and Ari looked composed on the ball as usual.

Jeremy, Justin and James stayed strong in defence, Jonathon and Peter won their battles in midfield, whilst Alex and Josh showed their versatility between midfield, attack and in goal.

From today’s game we tended to lose our positional sense in the second half, and must still try to release the ball quicker once we receive it or have won it in a tackle. We tended to get caught in possession rather than passing and moving into space.
A fair result, well done boys.

Next week we are away, 10am kick off against Bulleen at Veneto Social Club, Melway ref 32 D9.

‘ The Blues Twos’

‘Blues play like gladiators to defeat the Lions’

Saturday 21 July (Away)
v. Boroondara Lions

Down to only 9 available players, we arrived to play the Lions on a pitch that would certainly enable utilising the vast areas of space, whilst the goals would have made Mark Schwarzer look small!

Despite going 1 – 0 down within the first few minutes, we soon turned things around against a team we had drawn 0 – 0 with in the first game of the season.

Every player played their part and by half-time we were 3 – 1 up, Jonathon with 2 and Josh 1.

An early 4th goal from Josh in the second half only served to inspire the Lions as we took our foot off the ball. Within 10 minutes they had battled back to 4 – 4.

With 6 minutes to go, the B2s found a second wind, and with the parents cheering them on, netted an amazing 3 goals to seal a tremendous 7 – 4 victory.

This was by far our best performance of the season, especially so with the way we fought back when our backs were against the wall.

Jonathon with 4 was magnificent, whilst Josh worked hard with 3.

Every player should be proud of their effort. Kirk was again confident in goal and had no chance with any of their goals, making a number of important saves. James, Lochie and Jeremy were outstanding in defence with the way they tackled and attacked the ball.

Alex, playing an unfamiliar game just in front of the defence, was calm under pressure and supplied our attack with the chances to score. Peter and Jack both showed how they have improved over the season, giving us the width in midfield, getting stuck into tackles and providing neat interchanges of passes when they could.

Great effort boys, you should be proud of your performance!!!!

To Recap:
United have designed a program that will give the club 1 cent from every litre of fuel purchased by our club members and supporters from any of United's hundreds of outlets around Australia using their specially designed "Doncaster Rovers and United Community Benefits Card"

To help the club benefit you will need to complete a form that will be given to you by your team manager.

‘ The Blues Twos’

‘Blues finally shake off the late night hangover’

Saturday 14 July (Away)
v. Knox City

The preparation for the game started midweek with a behind closed doors training session at Action Indoor Sports, aimed at stabilising team morale after the disappointment of the cancellation of last week’s game!

However, the pre-game get together the night before seemed to take its toll on the boys in the opening 10 minutes of the game. Too many soft drinks had obviously kept them up late, whilst numerous visits to the dessert counter had made them too bloated to move.

Eventually we got our act together and woke up. Following team instructions to pass the ball rather than dribble on what could be said to be a rather bumpy pitch, we started to create chances and by half-time had scored 3. Alex, Josh and Jonathon, whose goal was a fine individual effort, all got on the score sheet.

A determined second half effort kept the score the same, most notably due to several fine saves from Kirk, and strong tackling from Lochie, James and Jeremy in defence.

Peter continued his improvements on the left of midfield with another solid performance, with Jack showing some nice touches on the right. Ari buzzed around in midfield demonstrating his skill and control on the ball.

A good 3 – 0 result in the end.

All Home Games Cancelled 7th and 8th July

Hi Everyone

Please note all games scheduled for both pitches at Anderson Park for this Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th July 2007 have been CANCELLED as per the Manningham Council communication below.

"...I refer our recent conversation regarding the condition of the Main & Upper Pitch at Anderson Park and the forecast for inclement weather on Saturday. Council recommends that the Doncaster Rovers and FFV take advantage of the catch up round by shifting fixtured games from Sunday 8 July to August 19. This should provide some much needed rest/recovery for the pitch, given that there are fixtured games 6, 11, 14 July in the coming week.

Sports Liaison OfficerManningham City Council..."

I have notified the FFV of this matter and they will notify the referees. All teams that were scheduled for a home game must notify the opposition immediately.

The club will liaise with the FFV and will keep everyone informed about the games being re-scheduled.

We apologise for the inconvenience.

Anderson Park Main Pitch was to Close

Doncaster Rovers Soccer Club Announces
Anderson Park Main Pitch was to close!

Good Afternoon Everyone,

I have just received a call from Council informing us that they are CLOSING the main pitch at Anderson Park.

Parks Department wants the pitch closed for TRAINING and FIXTURES.

Having spoken to Zac, and he agreed, to have games re-fixtured at this late stage would be impossible.

I explained to them that we have not had any teams training on the Main Pitch for two weeks and that the pitch is closed for all activity except fixtures until further notice.

After much discussion it has been AGREED, that we can continue to play games but no other activity whatsoever. Council officers will visit the venue during their trips during the day and during evenings to check that there is no other activity. Should they find any other activity except for official FFV fixtures they will IMMEDIATELY CLOSE ground. I explained to them that we have the Goalkeeper coach using the North West corner on Tuesday evenings for 1 hour and they are ok with that.

Urgent notice needs to go to all members.

Thanks

Steve Hargitay
President

DRSC needs artificial grass pitches to guarantee that our kids get to play sport and not kicked off half way during a season.

And this will be the commitee's Number 1 priority to get for the club's members.
  • 2 artificial pitches up the top
  • 1 grassed main pitch.

We will achieve this by careful planning, budgeting and local, state and federal goverment grants of some kind.

Round 12 Match Report

Rovers narrowly lost to league leaders Diamond Valley 1-0 in what has been described as controversial circumstances.

Rovers had won the last 4 games without conceding and Diamond Valley sat atop the pile, despite mixed results in recent weeks.

The game was began at a frenetic pace, with Valley disregarding Rovers' great away form and pushing for the early lead.

Manny Pappas pulled off some outstanding saves to keep Rovers in the match.

Rovers seemed to miss Ross Cardillo (suspended) and captain Robbie Ardesi (quad tear) as Valley surged forward in the early stages.

Towards the end of the first half Rovers managed to pull themselves back into the game with some solid work in midfield.

With 5 minutes remaining in the half, Valley pushed forward and almost found an opener.

Stuart Laing rounded Pappas only for Johnny Strateas to slide in, smothering a certain goal.

In the second half Rovers began to dominate proceedings, with Matthew Wilson and Ramzi Nasser effective down the flanks.

A controversial moment followed the 65 minute mark, with a half-cleared shot seemingly handled by a Valley player on their goal line, only for referee Geoff Boyle to wave play on.

Rovers dominated for long periods but Valley thought they may have an unlikely winner on 82 minutes, with Jason Vukadin bringing down Kamer Simsek for a penalty.

However, Manny Pappas saved Antonio Giuliano's penalty attempt and the ascendancy seemed to remain with Rovers.

With stoppage time approaching Rovers continued to push forward and Valley resorted to the odd counterattack.

It was a Valley counter that controversially resulted in a winner at the end of normal time.

A Valley through ball to Oner Simsek saw him round Pappas and put the ball in the net.

Supporters of both sides adjudged Simsek offside by a couple of metres; but the flag stayed down and Valley rapturously celebrated snatching all three points.

‘First half blitz leaves ASHburton up in
smoke’

Saturday 30 June (Away)
v. Ashburton

Having made some tentative steps into the transfer market to bolster our squad due to holiday commitments, the offer of a box of Anzac biscuits and half time oranges were unable to tempt Archie Thompson to leave the Victory! However, he would have struggled getting a game, especially after our first half performance.

Playing in our slick away shirts, we took the game to Ashburton from the off. We looked dangerous every time we attacked and soon made the decisive breakthrough.

Utilising the space and quick movement of the ball, Josh continued his goal scoring form of last week, and soon had grabbed 5 before half time. Alex added another, and we went in at half time 6 – 1 up. The performance so far was built on strong tackling and passing through Jonathon and Ari in midfield, whilst the reliable rotation of our defence of James, Lochie, Peter, Jack and Jeremy, enabled Kirk to continue his improvement in goal.

Eager to not fall away in the second half and maintain our dominance, we unfortunately let Ashburton grow in confidence. We tended to push up too far and left Kirk isolated and having no chance in goal. Although Alex managed to slot home his 10th of the season, we still ended the game 7 – 4 victors. Josh with 5 and Alex with 2.

A special mention to James, who had his best game of the season at right back. He was determined with his tackling and confident when bringing the ball out of defence.

Next week we face Mooroolbark, 10am kick-off at Anderson Park.

‘No banana skin for the B2s’

Saturday 23 June (Home)
v. Doncaster Rovers B1s

We entered the home game against Doncaster Rovers B1s with a full squad of 12 to pick from, and no pyjamas in sight!!!

In the first half, we took the game to the B1s. We tackled well and looked to create space as much as possible. Jonathon proving strong in the middle of midfield, Ari and Alex providing telling passes, and Josh providing the clinical finishes to convert the pressure. In fact, a chant of ‘Shearer, Shearer’ rang out from our impartial referee, Jim, when Josh slotted his 4th goal for the half.

The first half was a very determined display. Again, our defence limited the B1s to only a few shots, getting in challenges and not enabling them any time on the ball. Justin, Jeremy and Lochie all worked well in the backline, whilst Kirk dealt with anything that came his way.

The 4 – 0 half-time score was still no reason for complacency in the second half.
The second half was much more even, both teams creating opportunities. Jack and Alex grabbed one each, and Josh bagged his 5th of the game on his return. The B1s deservedly got on the score sheet three times.

It was pleasing to see James, Peter and Chris continue to develop both their confidence on the ball, touch and willingness to get stuck into their tackles with more determination.

The final result was a 7 – 3 victory. We looked much more solid all over the pitch, created plenty of scoring opportunities and took our chances well.
Great effort boys!!!!
