Round 5 - U10 Yellow - Match Report

Rovers take sting out of Comet’s tail!

Saturday 24 May (home) v Casey Comets.

Basking in their unbeaten start to the season, we welcomed the also unbeaten Casey to our fortress at Anderson Park.
Having 15 boys ready for selection immediately gave the coach his first headache, with every boy worth his place in the starting line up. His other headache was controlling his right-hand man, Carlos, after his tactical brain had worked overtime in bringing the Champions League trophy back to Old Trafford!
An even opening to the game eventually brought the first chance to Rovers, with the rebound breaking to Alex who calmly chipped into an empty net.
No real clear cut chances followed and we went in at half-time one up.
Continual interchanges didn’t help the flow to our game, but we finally doubled our lead when neat, skillful play from Yanni left Josh to slot home the second.
Casey continued to battle hard, creating a couple of their own chances which resulted in a goal line clearance from Alex.
Kirk dealt with the few occasions in goal he was called upon, and
again we looked good down the right with Matt and Matthew combining well, whilst Johnny and Lachie equally worked well down the left.
Through the centre, Jeremy, Anton, Jonathon M, Jonathon S and James fought strongly, whilst Jeremy was ever reliable as last man. Jacob played well in his unusual role out of goal, and Alex continued his impressive goal a game, taking him to 6 for the season.
Jason and Yanni both provided the inspiration that gave us the
2 – 0 win and four straight victories.
Another determined performance, well done boys, and thanks to the parents for their support.
The coaches’ final headache will be wishing Doncaster Rovers to actually get beat. They play Leeds in the play-off final tomorrow at Wembley. Let’s hope for promotion for the Mighty Whites!

Round 4 - U9 Yellow - Match Report

Saturday 17th May vs Whitehorse
And The Juggernaut Continues:

Rip up your Melbourne Victory membership, switch off Foxtel. If you want to be entertained and see exciting football, just come along to DRSC U9 Yellow. Another week, another convincing win with plenty of goals on offer. Once again the boys in yellow showed their exceptional talents, and to quote the coach at half time, “boys, it’s not about the goals now, just go out there and pass the ball around”, which they did deftly with aplomb.

Seven goals till half time and a further five in the second half accompanied with another clean score sheet, convincingly added to the cumulative total of 37 goals for, and zero goals against in the opening three games of the season.

The avalanche began with what could only be described as a lightning goal by Spyros. Aptly described as the writer inappropriately blinked at the wrong moment only to miss what the excited patrons giving great support described as a blinder. The second quickly followed by Alexandre after receiving an excellent cross from some good work by Anthony running down the right wing drawing three defenders, leaving space in the middle for an accurate low ball to be slotted home. It wasn’t long before number three was added with a sweetly timed through pass which left Spyros with a one-on-one against the opposing keeper and he expertly made no mistake with the ensuing goal. Next it was Alexandre’s turn to run down the left wing and give a superb cross which found Ryan in the perfect spot to slam home another.

It was apparent that the boys came to play today relishing the wet weather conditions, and enjoying the freedom down the wings, providing many crosses and accurate passes that resulted in numerous opportunities. Defensively, the ever reliable and rock solid duo of Aaron and Michael who have formed a wonderful understanding and partnership, let nothing slip by them. Not content to just clear the balls long, these imposing defenders began many attacking moves with their exceptional vision and passing. The next goal was to come from just such an occasion as Aaron cleared the ball directly to Jack’s feet, who turned more sweetly than a prima ballerina, disposing of two defenders and blasting the ball into the back of the net. The next was a wonderfully opportunistic goal with a rocket like shot from Spyros, which rebounded off the keeper straight to Jack who made no mistake with the tap in. And just to round off the half, with his second was Alexandre with a low unstoppable bullet into the left corner.

The second half began with Dion bursting onto the scene scoring two magnificent goals in succession. The first a rebound off the post from Noobar’s tremendous shot, the second a goal mouth scramble, where he kept his feet while others were falling around him. Noobar was relishing his new role in the midfield taking charge and winning the contested ball often. Once again Christos made the left wing his own, controlling everything down the flank and giving a great pass to Joshua who hit a powerful drive which managed to be deflected by a defender, wrong footing the keeper and giving the Rovers their tenth goal. Another great run from Dion, bursting forward, left Cheyne in space in front of a defensive wall but with determination found a way to get the ball through the sea of legs and capitalise on a great game of courage with his first for the day. It was the fresh legs of Alex who made an immediate impact in the second half adding toughness and chasing down every loose ball.

The best was saved till last, Beginning with Michael in defence who controlled, looked up, sized up the situation, passed to Anthony on the right, who quickly moved the ball on down to the wing where Alexandre was waiting to run onto it, he cut back onto his left foot, whipped the cross in where Ryan with one swift turn and volley hit the back of the net. Simply magnificent. The final score 12 – 0.

Well done to all the boys and the coach.

Next week we meet Ashburton at home at Anderson Park with a 10am kick-off.

Round 4 - U12B - Match Report

12 A v Oakleigh

The 12A's travelled to Oakleigh on the back of a comfortable 6-0 win last week, and looked to consolidate on that result aginst stronger opposition this week. With both teams similarly placed on the ladder Oakleigh were desperate to come away with a result.

There were some key positional changes this week with Tom being moved into a holding midfield role and Cameron being put into the right side of attack. From the kick off Rovers looked to maintain possession and were spreading the ball around the pitch intelligently. The space out wide was being expoited very well, with the new combination of Jake and Cameron on the right side of the pitch looking extremely effective.

An Early penalty claim earned us a free kick on the very edge of the box with the late tackle being judged to have been just outside of the area. Cameron stepped up to take the free kick and calmly placed it into the top corner for an early lead. The boys continued to show determination and hunger for the ball, and looked determined to score more.

The 2nd goal came shortly after, with Cameron converting with a sensational strike from an awkward angle. The power and placement of the strike was simply too much for the Oakleigh keeper who could only watch the ball fly into the corner of the net. Cameron claimed his hat trick with a strike from an identical position, but this time hitting the ball with his left foot.

The boys controlled possession and the back three of Adrian, Terry and Mike cut out the balls Oakleigh attempted and switched defence into attack quickly. Josh and Liam stepped up a gear this week with some impressive play in midfield.

Cameron scored his 4th in the second half to round out an exceptional and clinical goalscoring display. Harry looked comfortable slotting into central midfield controlling and directing the play from the middle of the pitch. Tom was beginning to impose himself on the game after being moved out to left midfield and was on the receiving end of a pass from Cameron to slot home with a cool finish.

After a free kick awarded to Oakleigh a misdirected kick fell straight to Tom who lobbed the ball from distance with the keeper stranded to make the score 6-0. There were still some great chances left to extend the lead, with Stephen and Stefan both very unluck to have missed, and Damien attempting some great solo runs from midfield.

The final score was 6-0, with the boys putting on their best performance so far this season. The boys now prepare for their big clash against undefeated Richmond next week at Anderson Park.

Scorers: Cameron 4, Tom 2
Goal of the week: Tom

Round 4 - U10 Joeys Blue - Match Report

It …rained goals for the U10 Blues
Doncaster – Whitehorse 8-1 !!! 17.05.2008

The Doncaster U10 Blues continued their impressive form, yet another week. In spite of the cold weather conditions and the constant rain ( which prompted Manuel to give our boys a marathon warm up to get them ready ) the ‘Blues’ army defeated Whitehorse by 8-1!

The game began with the ‘Blues’ putting on the pressure from the opening minutes and after a few good chances to take the lead, they finally opened the score line with Peter putting his name for the first time this season on the score sheet.

With a tight defense, controlled by Declan and Alexander in the middle and with Ethan and Corey on the sides, it gave the midfielders a lot more freedom to push forward.

Damian, in the middle with Billy and Justin to his sides, did a lot of work bringing the ball forward, where Jake was taking shot after shot and finally scoring another 2 for the ‘Blues’.

Christopher and Michael on the other hand were winning possession and distributing the ball out wide, where Timothy and James in the second half, were making a lot of runs producing another 3 goals for the ‘Blues’ with Timothy scoring twice and James scoring once more.

But it wasn’t just Peter that scored his first for the season, Stefan also finding the back of the net and Jack making his mark on the game yet again, with another great goal.

Marko, in goals wasn’t busy in the first half, but in the second half he produced again a few fine saves, but was unlucky to concede one goal. Overall, the boys once more played good attacking soccer and on many occasions, tried to put together a series of passes. It’s back to training this week (WEDNESDAY 5.30 P.M. SHARP…) where we need to continue the hard work, as we have another big game coming up on Saturday at home against Brighton.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!

Round 4 - U14A - Match Report

U14A Doncaster Rovers vs Brandon Park 18th May

On a wet and windy day Doncaster hosted Brandon Park at Anderson Park Reserve.
It was nice to be back under the grandstand for this game with a hot cappuccino! Although it had rained most of Saturday the ground was in good condition. Rovers kicked with the wind and soon had Brandon Park on the defensive due to good passing out of the centre where Joel, Chris, Steve and newcomer Alex were in control.
This provided some opportunities up forward although Brandon Park had their backline well crowded with most of their team. After a couple of fruitless forays, Chris ran the ball down the left and passed to Drew’s advantage, where he attracted the defence to release Steve into the clear on the right. Steve hammered the ball into the goal line where it glanced off a defenders shoulder straight into the net. Good goal Steve even if not in the book and good teamwork Rovers to open up the defence. It was nice to have a score early and allow the team confidence to pass the ball around all over the ground.

The backs were well on top with Michael, Jansen, Nick and Elliot under little pressure and Luke there to mop up the rare long bomb that posed no real threat. With plenty of possession Rovers were able to mount a number of attacks on the BP goal with clean passes across the ground. Drew to Chris but saved by the keeper. Alex to Nick Vass but another shot wide. Joel put in a good through ball but another miss. Jansen to Nick another shot wide, then Damien stepped up, again wide. The ball hardly left the Rovers forward line but play was congested and clean shots were hard to come by. By this stage Phil, Dion, James and Matt were also into the play with good ball control, allowing passing to position but without any further openings in the Brandon Park defence.

Half time: Rovers 1 : Brandon Park 0

The second half continued on like the first with many shots on goal but all wide. Damien had a couple of cracks in a minute, the second banging into the cross bar and bouncing straight out again. Brandon Park continued with long bombs out of defence usually straight to a Rovers defender. Further build ups went unrewarded as Damien headed to Phil but the shot missed. Soon after another cross came into Phil but the shot again went wide. Nick Dinakis was getting some throwing practice, and with a long throw into the box area Joel pounced and right foot volleyed passed a flat footed BP keeper into the net for the “game over” goal.

Rovers continued with solid team play all over the ground and at least another four shots on goal went wide or were stopped by the keeper. This gave a total of 18 shots on goal, so Rovers should have put away a few more than they did. At least the teamwork is still improving and should give confidence to take it right up to the top sides this year.

Scores at full-time: Rovers 2 : Brandon Park 0

Round 4 - U10 Kangaroo Yellow - Match Report

Proudly sponsored by ATOMICA COFFEE

No Fear in Lions’ Den!

Saturday 17 May (away) v. Bulleen 2.

After overcoming the hoodoo of beating Bulleen last week, we visited the other Bulleen team in our league, this week.
Minus several players due to illness, but sporting our new sponsored shirts by Atomica Coffee, we basked in the glorious 7oC and wet conditions. Pre-game bacon and eggs were consumed, whilst our squad welcomed the chance to warm up in the changing rooms away from the hostile environment that would greet the gladiators as they came out to battle.
As the temperature rose on the sideline, the game started with us feeling overawed in the opening 5 minutes.
Once we found our feet, we were one down.
However, our response to the instructions from the management team by the dugout was quick. Increasing pressure and a fine corner from Matt, was volleyed home by Yanni. Alex grabbed the second with a shot into the corner, and Josh’s angled drive made it 3.
Defensively we held firm, with Jonathon S running half the length of the pitch to make a last ditch challenge that even left his Dad gasping for oxygen!
With a 3 – 1 lead at half-time, the instructions were clear. Score the next goal and their heads will go down.
This we did. In fact, a repeat of the first half score line followed. Alex, Yanni and Matt all scored well taken goals, whilst the woodwork denied James a 7th.
Despite conceding one at the other end, our defence again showed increasing confidence. Jeremy leading the back line, ably supported by his lieutenants, Lachie, Jason, Jonathon M and Jonathon N. They all showed composure on the ball, won challenges under pressure, and provided the spark when we moved forward from the back.
Jacob made a confident debut in goal, whilst Matt played his best game yet on the right of midfield.
Jonathon S ran all day in midfield, linking well with James in the centre of midfield, providing the opportunities for our forwards to all get on the scoresheet.
Another good win, well done, boys, and thanks to the parents for their support.

Next week, home v Casey Comets, 12 noon kick-off at Anderson Park.
