U18 Glen Waverley 2 vs Doncaster Rovers 19th June, 2011
On a chilly and windy afternoon Rovers faced up against the bottom team for a percentage booster. With their clubrooms in the middle of a rebuild it was a coffee on the park day.
Rovers started off with Xavier (Mr Fixit) in goal, Steve, Tom and Mima at the back along with Loch sweeping, then Alex and Drew midfield with Sam, Jani & Anthony up forward. AAron & Anthony were out and on the pine were Gareth, Mitch, Michael & Aiden.
The game started out with Rovers having the gale and GW2 having nine players behind the ball just in case!! It was not long before Rovers with some effective passing were taking shots on goal. Jani had a good crack but this was equally well saved by their keeper. After a lot of congested play Rovers finally got on the scoreboard with a good cross by Sammy to an unattended Jani who popped the ball in. Some crisp passing from Drew to Anthony and onto Sammy resulted in a good goal that left GW motionless. The next goal resulted from a pinpoint lob just over the keepers arms from 20 metres out by Steve who had drifted into attack looking for an opponent to match up on. The ball was rarely leaving Rovers forward zone and when it did all the defenders were sharing and caring enough to pass the ball around just for the practice. With some ease Jani passed to Sammy who rammed home another goal. Just to show the forwards did not have all the glory Loch accepted a loose ball in the centre and proceeded to dribble, from a great height I may add, past several defenders and then put in a cracking shot into the back of the net. The whistle could not come soon enough for GW.
Half-time score: Glen Waverley 0 : Doncaster Rovers 5
After the break the wind would not relent and spectators were really feeling the cold. The subs came on to join in the demolition and while the goals were less frequent Rovers controlled the game and Xavier was never really put to the test. Tom, Mima and Steve put in some good runs and the midfield was well on top with Alex cleaning up any contested balls.
GW were able to kick the long ball but never really strung together more than two passes before turning the ball over.
After a long run of end to end play Drew beat his man and dribbled up to the keeper before picking the major opening. It got so cold my biro refused to write and my brain seized up as well. So someone kicked another goal as Rovers cruised to the line in another good team display where foot skills reigned supreme.
The final score was the same as when we played GW1, so it shows we treat all teams the same! Aaron has no need to lose sleep at night as his goalie job is not under scrutiny, Xavier is definitely better in midfield, not stuck down the back on his own, trying to encourage team mates who can hardly hear him as they are all up the other end of the ground.
Scores at full-time: Glen Waverley 0 : Doncaster Rovers 7
ROVERS –another quality exhibition of teamwork and cohesive play.
Keep your eye on the top of the ladder as this is where we want to be at the end of the season.
