Round 12 Match Report

Rovers narrowly lost to league leaders Diamond Valley 1-0 in what has been described as controversial circumstances.

Rovers had won the last 4 games without conceding and Diamond Valley sat atop the pile, despite mixed results in recent weeks.

The game was began at a frenetic pace, with Valley disregarding Rovers' great away form and pushing for the early lead.

Manny Pappas pulled off some outstanding saves to keep Rovers in the match.

Rovers seemed to miss Ross Cardillo (suspended) and captain Robbie Ardesi (quad tear) as Valley surged forward in the early stages.

Towards the end of the first half Rovers managed to pull themselves back into the game with some solid work in midfield.

With 5 minutes remaining in the half, Valley pushed forward and almost found an opener.

Stuart Laing rounded Pappas only for Johnny Strateas to slide in, smothering a certain goal.

In the second half Rovers began to dominate proceedings, with Matthew Wilson and Ramzi Nasser effective down the flanks.

A controversial moment followed the 65 minute mark, with a half-cleared shot seemingly handled by a Valley player on their goal line, only for referee Geoff Boyle to wave play on.

Rovers dominated for long periods but Valley thought they may have an unlikely winner on 82 minutes, with Jason Vukadin bringing down Kamer Simsek for a penalty.

However, Manny Pappas saved Antonio Giuliano's penalty attempt and the ascendancy seemed to remain with Rovers.

With stoppage time approaching Rovers continued to push forward and Valley resorted to the odd counterattack.

It was a Valley counter that controversially resulted in a winner at the end of normal time.

A Valley through ball to Oner Simsek saw him round Pappas and put the ball in the net.

Supporters of both sides adjudged Simsek offside by a couple of metres; but the flag stayed down and Valley rapturously celebrated snatching all three points.
