Boys U13C win 2-1 vs Croydon
Well the Under 13C’s did it again – we won 6-0 at home last week, and won 2-1 this week away to Croydon City Arrows. And we remain top of the ladder!
In many ways this week’s win was more impressive and more pleasing than last week’s 6-0, as we had to fight to come back – and that’s exactly what these boys did!
We started well, with some great passing and team play. With sustained team pressure, and camping in the Croydon half, Alex Overmars scored for the boys in the first half. In hot sunny conditions the boys were glad when half time drinks came and we were ahead. We should have been 3 goals up, but the Croydon goalkeeper had a great game and kept a lot of our shots out.
Croydon stepped it up a bit in the second half, and got an equalizer (damn pomme coach!). Our boys heads went down initially after that, but with some “encouragement” from the sidelines, and a great save by Simeon Aloneftis in goals which kept us in the game at one point – we then stepped it back up again and pushed forward and had Croydon defending like crazy.
After sustained pressure, the ball finally broke free in Croydon’s penalty box, and Sean Wales stepped forward to convert for the Under 13Cs. Now we were back in the lead at 2-1 ahead! The victory lap after the goal was the fastest some of the boys had run all game!
With the coaches blood pressure finally restored, the whistle at the end was a great feeling for the boys (and me!) – high fives and the victory song “huddle” resulted. Fans were cheering in the terracing!
Special mention also goes to Alex Overmars who clashed heads with Sam Bertuna and had to come off with a blood nose – shows the determination of these 2 great little players as they tried to get the ball in the net yet again.
Good goalkeeping, great defence, tireless midfield, and attacking forward play. We’re not getting complacent as I won’t allow that to happen, but if you want some entertainment, come and see the Under 13 C’s next week at Anderson Park at 11:20 am when we take on Glen Waverley.
