Saturday 9th August v Mooroolbark.
Fourteen Zip could easily have been more!
An early start at Mooroolbark saw the team faced with what can only be described as a tiny pitch!! Compared to the last time we faced Mooroolbark at their home ground when we played on a full pitch and scored 19 goals, this was an exercise in containment which could have been deliberate or just a coincidence. Either way the result was a very tight ground where there was little space for the boys to spread the ball around.
Did this stop us? No way! Straight from the off the ball was passed out to the right side and was fed through to Christos who raced down the side and hit a looping cross straight into the net! 1-0. Within a minute more pressure resulted in a stab shot from Jack at near range to make it 2-0 and by 4 minutes Dion had made it 3-0.
We all thought another big haul was on its way but we had to wait until the 7th minute for the next one. Dion passed through to Jack who flicked the ball to Tillman whose shot was initially stopped but followed up with some neat skill and slick goal. 4-0.
Multiple attacks were often interspersed with groans of OOH or yes yes NOOOO as the ball went to the left, right or hit the woodwork. The ref was also interesting as he openly coached his kids from the pitch, moved the ball forward and wasted as much time as he could in between shots.
At 11 minutes an attack came from the left into Jack in mid field who fed the ball across to Christos who was having another best on field game. He crossed into Tillman who dragged the ball back and slipped a short ball to Dion who slammed home from 2 metres. Once again his acrobatic celebration was a joy to see! 5-0.
Any attacks set up by Mooroolbark were being quickly dealt with by a solid Aaron and Michael and Cheney in goal only had one or two touches.
On 14 minutes we had the start of a Josh one two. A throw from Michael on the right went all the way through the players and was met by Josh waiting on the goal line for an easy tap in. He followed this up with a quick tackle from the kick off, a jink passed two players and an extra long range shot that should have been saved but somehow went passed the keeper for 7-0.
To round off the first half Michael stepped into a loose ball to ram home the eighth and Jack picked up the ninth after absolutely great work from Alexandre on the left whose tenacity won two hard shin bone jarring tackles. Great work Alexandre!
The half time whistle surprised us all as it arrived at 18.30 minutes rather than the usual 20 but it didn’t really matter.
Half Time 9-0.
The second half started off as a scrappy affair with plenty of chances but no real finishes worth noting. The deadlock was broken at 6 minutes with Jack slotting home his hat-trick with a volley from close range from a great cross from Christos.
At 11 minutes a corner on the right was stopped at the post and came back to Christos who lofted another great cross into the heart of the goal line. A Mooroolbark defender couldn’t do anything but deflect the ball into the net and I was already writing down Own Goal when the ref awarded a penalty.
This surprised several of the parents and both myself and Rob mentioned to the ref that penalties were not awarded in under nines. It was a mistake I made myself against FC Bullen Lions and was just pointing this out as a helpful comment. What we were then subjected to was nothing short of physical and verbal intimidation by the ref and Mooroolbark parents to which they should be ashamed.
Enough said on this as Dion took the penalty and converted after the keeper saved the initial shot. 11-0.
The second half went much to plan and a further two goals were added by the ever sharp Cheney on 12 minutes (excellent flip by the way Cheney!!) 13-0.
On 15 minutes the last goal was added by Dion for his fourth of the game after a great breakthrough shot by Tillman was parried by the keeper.
The second half was once again cut short at 18.20 minutes but by that time we were all looking forward to our warm cars and coffee!
Final score 14-0. Goals for 165 against 4! Won 15 Lost 0. Only 100% record left intact at Doncaster Rovers.
Train Hard, Play Fair and Have Fun.
