Saturday 12th July v Ashburton.
Strong Opposition but still no match!
The teams looked evenly matched in the size and physique area and the game started off very even. Ashburton were not intimidated at all and were attacking quite freely. Our midfield in Ryan, Jack and Cheney were helping the defence mop up initial early attacks and turn them into Doncaster offensive moves.
The boys once again were lacking structure to start off and the game was getting bogged down in the Ashburton half with no real chances coming for the first five minutes.
The deadlock was broken when an attack down the right saw Josh pass to Ryan who slotted the ball in for Alexandre to hammer home. 1-0.
Once again Doncaster were having the majority of the ball with many chances either going at the keeper or wide as the boys overran the ball.
Cheney made it 2-0 on 9 minutes when a nicely floated corner came in from Alexandre straight through to Cheney who easily converted.
Although there was a great deal of attacking it was not all one a way street. Ashburton were having several attacks of their own but it was good to see the Doncaster defence handling these quite easily especially when they were backed up by the midfield boys. One such example was a great corner by Ashburton which was headed clear by Jack to Cheney who passed forward to Christos who passed forward to Josh only for the ball to go just wide of the net. A great sweeping move.
Half time 2-0.
The second half was going to be easier just because we were now playing downhill.
After a few minutes the boys created a goal from nowhere with a superb move. Christos to Dion who moved it inside to Jack whose side of the foot flick found Josh to hammer home. 3-0.
Within a minute, Josh became provider from the right with a low cross which was met on the volley by Jack for Doncaster’s fourth. 4-0.
The boys were in the zone from then on and several attacks resulted with excellent work down both wings by Cheney, Josh and Christos backed by solid graft in the middle by Jack, Dion and the ever running Ryan.
The only slight scare we had was when Ryan had been switched into goal and Ashburton had an attack down the right. Just when you thought Aaron had it covered he managed to sneek a cross in which was met by a looping shot. At one point I thought it was in but Ryan reached up his right hand and batted it away.
