Saturday 12 July (away) v Bulleen 1.
With the coach back after his 3 week scouting mission to England to look for the new Kewell or Cahill, during what could be said as many shopping expeditions to the high street, and his tour of Wembley to line up playing one of Rovers games there if they can accommodate their growing fan base, the only surprise on his return was his right-hand man, Carlos, had jumped ship to fill Big Phil’s boots as Portugal head coach. Obviously his impressive record of played 2 won 1 and his recruitment of numerous assistants on the sidelines had CQ their prime candidate.
Having a full squad available for the first time this season, pre-game photos were subsequently taken.
Acclimatising to the somewhat arctic conditions and bouncing back from last week’s first loss, we began slowly, but ground our way in to the game, taking the lead through James’ superb strike from the edge of the area. We remained solid and held our formation well, Jacob contributing very well down the right side.
With the wind at our back in the second half, we dominated possession and the pressure told when on his return, Josh added a second, followed shortly afterwards by Ari’s chip over the keeper for the third. Jonathon S hit the bar as we looked for more goals.
Despite Bulleen adding a 29th minute consolation, we ran out 3 – 1 winners. Again, defensively we looked strong, Jeremy commanding as last man in front of our goalkeeper, Kirk. Matty, Jonathon M, Anton, Jonathon N, Jason and Lachie all made telling contributions. James, Jacob, Jonathon S, Matthew and Ari each supplied the run and fight in midfield, whilst Alex, Yanni and Josh all applied pressure to the Bulleen defence.
Well done boys.
Training on Thursday, 6pm at Donvale Reserve.
