Talented coach to lead Doncaster women

Rovers have bolstered their women's stocks with the appointment of Mary Iskander in the dual positions of Women's Head Coach and Director of Women's football.

Ms Iskander's impressive resume includes coaching with the FFV Academy program, coaching several teams at Futsal (indoor soccer) National Championship level and even work as a junior coach for Melbourne Victory.

"I've done a lot of coaching this year with Melbourne Victory, I was one of five or six people who were officially employed to coach with them on all the clinics they ran for junior kids," Ms Iskander said.

Ms Iskander also enjoyed much success at the most recent Futsal National Championship, leading the Victorian under 16 girls to the top of their group and into the final.

"At the most recent competition in January we were runners up at the National Championships after leading our pool," she said.

"Within those girls I managed to develop the goalkeeper who is the best goalkeeper in Australia for her age group.

"My captain was the most valuable player in the entire tournament for her age group and one of my other players was the most valuable player of the grand final, so we had some pretty good success."

Ms Iskander is also a great player, and although currently out due to a knee reconstruction, has played Premier League for Eastern Lions and has extensively represented Victoria in Futsal.

Despite the FFV having not yet decided whether Rovers' senior women will be registered in Division Two or Three for the coming season, Ms Iskander has announced high aims.

"If we manage to start the seniors in Division Two this year I would try and get promoted in the next two years, and hopefully within about four years - and that is on the long side, I want to try and get it shorter than that," Ms Iskander said.

"My aim is in the next few years to have a Premier League team for the women and to develop all the girls up through the club, so they can be the ones playing in the Premier League themselves."

Club Secretary Kieran McManus said Rovers would be putting a lot of resources into promoting the women's teams, starting with the appointment of Ms Iskander.

"We have appointed Mary to try and bolster the women's division at Doncaster Rovers Soccer Club and we are doing that by looking to be competitive this year and trying to get ourselves promoted, whether we are in Division Three or Division Two," Mr McManus said.

"This year we will have under 13, 14 and 15 girls and our senior women.

"We want to give it a real crack for the girls to try and promote girls' soccer at Doncaster as best we can - and Mary wants to promote women's soccer."
