Doncaster Rovers Soccer Club is pleased to announce the appointment of talented young manager Matthew McNamara to coach Rovers' under 12s for the 2007 season.
Mr McNamara is well qualified for the role, as he holds a Football Federation Victoria (FFV) youth licence, manages the country Victorian under 15s and currently acts as a selector for the metro Victorian under 13s.
Mr McNamara said his new role as Rovers' under 12s coach presents a lot of opportunity to develop talented young players.
"For me it is about player development and getting as many players as I can into the state squad," he said.
"I am a qualified FFV state team selector so I like to think I know talent when I see it.
"I have attended a lot of Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) training sessions and have seen how they do things and I have tried to structure my programs along those lines."
Bob McGuinness, 1980 Victorian player of the year and top goal scorer with Brunswick Juventus, is now head coach of the Victorian under 13s, and in this role he has worked closely with Mr McNamara.
Mr McGuinness said Mr McNamara was knowledgeable and articulate in his role as a state selector.
"He [Mr McNamara] helped me out as a selector for the under 13 state team and he has always been well-prepared, quite knowledgeable and is always prepared to put his point of view across," Mr McGuinness said.
"He was always well-prepared and he knew what he was doing."
Rovers Committee member Adrian Cappola said the signing of Mr McNamara was part of a long-term strategy to recruit the best coaching staff to Doncaster Rovers.
Mr Cappola said the club planned to develop strong youth teams with the aim of representing Australia in the Manchester United Premier Cup.
The Manchester United Premier Cup is the largest international youth football tournament in the world, with 7000 teams competing from more than 40 countries each year.
"It is our aim to build a team that can qualify and represent Australia in the Manchester United Cup, and actually be extremely competitive," Mr Cappola said.
"We have planned for the longterm, and 2007 is first but hopefully we will have the same crew in 2010."
Mr Cappola said there will be trials for the 2007 under 12s team in Doncaster starting Monday February 19.
